Maimonides Memorial

A monument in Cordova, Spain, Maimonides' birthplace, honoring its famous resident. It resides in the courtyard of the only synagogue in the city that still stands since the 13th century, when Maimonides and his family fled the city because of anti-semitism. - www.chabad.org

JEWISH HEALING - HOLISTICALLY BIBLICAL

Dr Suzanne Joy Stuart, PhD ND

Jewish mysticism and holistic healing have dramatically grown during the recent years. Here is where pre-biblical era merges with the contemporary times to transform the necessary overall awakening and holistic health improvement for the being. Jewish laws preeminent philosophies of health are paralleled with food concepts generated by G-d. "...and, its fruit shall be for food and its leaf for Medicine." (Ezekiel 47, 7-12)

During the 12th C., The Jewish philosopher, Maimonides, known as RaMBaM - Rabbi Moses Ben Maimon, contributed enormously to both Judaism and Medicine; he researched and wrote works on Jewish law, hygiene, natural health, nutrition and a balanced mind; these were considered fundamental health practices that influenced both the people of that era and future generations. He was considered one of the most respected influential physicians of the world, while his philosophical practices were revered for "both body and soul." His life was wholeheartedly devoted to the Jewish people, Torah and Talmud. "Any illness which can be cured by nutrition should not be treated by any other means." - Maimonides

G-d created everything, with the Torah, including remedies for all ills and rules for healthy living. "The Torah is a Tree of Life..." - (Proverbs, 3, 18). According to Torah, the original diet for humans was vegetarian. Dietary changes occurred after the flood when G-d spoke to Noah. Unfortunately, the omega-6 fatty acids found in land animals are immeasurably less healthy than the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. We were and still are designed to consume a daily diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fish. The Talmud advises us to restrain from consuming meat, or at best eat less meat, and only once per day. "And G-d said, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, on which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be food" (Genesis 1:29). In order to promote healing, we have been guided to consume healthier foods while abstaining from overindulgence. The Talmud states, "Eat a third, drink a third, and leave empty in your stomach the remaining third." The easiest way to extend life and health is to lower the number of calories consumed and increase daily activity. Amazingly enough, the Hebrew word for food is "l'achlah" which has the numerical value of 86; the same equivalence as "Elohim" which is the appellation used for G-d in this passage. Perhaps through Jewish numerology, we may accept that food is an agent for G-d's healing, yes?

The first time illness was explicitly indicated in the Holy Scriptures was when Joseph was informed that his father, Jacob was sick (Genesis 48,1). Invariably, we are ill when something is physiologically, emotionally or mentally out of balance or lacking. 'Cholah' in Hebrew comes from the root: empty/lacking. Poor dietary conditions shall contribute to an over abundance of ills, including a weakened heart: "A healing heart is life for the flesh, but anger rots the bones" (Proverbs 14,30.) "The liver is the seat of anger. If a drop of gall [bile] falls into the liver, the anger is placated" (Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Blessings 61b).

Much biblical text refers to numerous remedies for healings. "Our Rabbis taught Five things were said of garlic: It satiates, it keeps the body warm, it brightens up the face, it increases semen, and kills parasites in the bowels" - Talmud, Baba Kama 82a. Today, we know that raw garlic is one of nature's natural antibiotic remedies thus being essential for enhancing our immune system.

BIBLICAL REMEDIES R'FA

By: Dr Susanne Joy Stuart, PhD ND

"Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for you are my praise." - Jeremiah 17:14

During biblical ages, healing remedies were primarily derived from herb or plant food; they were devoid of harmful man-made chemical toxins. These biblical remedies were consumed raw or prepared as a tea or poultice. Biblical Remedies were used in their natural occurring form that is contrast to contemporary foods or herbal remedies. Overcooked, devitalized, processed or vitamin enriched remedies are one current primary poor health contributor. When G-D created the plants they were designed to heal and improve the overall sentient being. The son of Sira said: "G-d caused drugs to spring from the earth; with them the physician heals the wound and the apothecary compounds his preparations." - Genesis Rabbah 10:6
